Boys, be ambitious! ---William Smith Clark.
1876年為美國麻州農業大學校長克拉克博士應日本政府之邀，到北海道札幌農校任職，八個月後期滿，克拉克在返回美國時，騎在馬上，對送別的師生們大聲說了一句話，「Boys，be ambitious!」(少年よ、大志を抱け。) 鼓舞學生不要以金錢或世俗名聲做未來打算，應該為知識, 正義, 國民素質的提升而努力。 這句話成為影響日本好幾代學子的名言，而今銘刻在北海道大學這句話就成了北海道大學(即原先札幌農校)校園內的克拉克紀念雕像上。
